When tesamorelin enters the conversation

Reading the evidence

# What did the trials find?

An advert uses the word proven. The useful response is to ask: proven for which people, for which result, and over what length of time?

## The people and the result matter

The Falutz trial published in 2007 enrolled 412 adults with HIV and excess belly fat for 26 weeks.

In that paper, deep fat around the organs fell by 15.2% with tesamorelin and rose by 5.0% with a dummy shot.

The dummy shot is the comparison treatment, called a placebo. It lets readers compare the study groups.

Use the paper's figures above when reading this summary. The label calculates the same trial differently: it reports an 18% fall with tesamorelin and a 2% rise with the dummy shot.

## Another trial found a smaller change

The Falutz paper published in 2010 reported a trial with 404 adults: deep belly fat fell 10.9% with tesamorelin and 0.6% with the dummy shot.

The label's main-trial results show little change in overall body weight.

That difference in what was measured matters. A belly-fat result does not become a weight-loss result just because both involve body size.

## The effect was not permanent

In the main trials, some people switched to a dummy shot at week 26; deep belly fat then came back over the next 26 weeks.

Ask how a proposed plan handles ongoing review and a decision to stop. The trial result makes that a practical question, not just a detail at the end.

## Other hopes need their own evidence

Studies have explored liver fat and thinking skills, but these were not approved tesamorelin uses in the September 28, 2026 labels.

Thinking-test findings were mixed: an earlier study found a benefit, while a later HIV study did not show a clear difference between groups.

Ask for a study that matches the proposed purpose. Then ask what it leaves unanswered.

## Match the claim to the study

Keep the people, the result and the time period attached to each trial claim. They are part of what the evidence means.
